Martin Rev (Suicide)

Martin Rev is a composer, instrumentalist, and co-founder of Suicide, the New York duo that redefined the boundaries of electronic music and punk from the late 1970s onwards. Forged in the city’s restless underground scene, Suicide built a sound unlike anything before them: hypnotic drum machine loops, abrasive synthesizers, and Alan Vega’s irrepressible voice, a combination that electrified stages and left a profound mark on generations of artists to come.

His self-titled solo debut (1980) is regarded as one of the foundational works of electronic music. Built on enchanting bubblegum melodies, dissonant textures, and infinite rhythm loops rooted in New York doo-wop and rock and roll, the album proves that Rev’s sonic language was every bit as powerful and personal without Vega’s voice as with it. It stands apart from European contemporaries such as Kraftwerk or Tangerine Dream, glowing with a warmth and intensity that remain entirely its own.
