Capture/Resemble

The act of looking and being looked at activates a process of capture and learning between body and machine. The facial features and expressions of the audience are processed by a system inspired by the behaviour of artificial intelligence agents, constructing new forms of perception and response.

Each capture is archived and placed in relation to previous ones, searching for points of resemblance among the different people it has encountered. Drawing on this archive, the sculpture develops its own way of interacting, generating responses to human movement and expression. At certain moments, it stops reacting and enters phases of synthesis and reassessment, like a machine that dreams or consolidates its memories. At the back, an interface displays the data generated during the captures and visualises the state of the sculpture’s reinterpretation process.

As the title of the work suggests, Capture / Resemble transforms an apparently playful interaction with the machine into a process of capture and memory, making physically visible a form of algorithmic perception to evolve an abstract movement vocabulary aimed at a universal human-machine choreography.
